Our Humidor

We invite you to visit us and take a tour of our humidor. The rich, unadulterated aroma of fine, fresh tobacco held within is an unparalleled aesthetic  experience unique in today's cigar world.  The construction of our walk-in humidor is another example of how
we continue to develop the fusion of the past and future in the cigar  world by using traditional, natural materials according to cutting edge  theory in science and technology. The past teaches us that natural materials have been chosen for  hundreds of years for good reason. An organic product like cigars  must be handled with great care. The tobacco leaf absorbs scents  particularly easily and the odors will carry through even into its time  of smoking. Over the centuries, we have learned which materials help most in protecting and developing the subtle aromas and character  within the leaf itself.

SPANISH CEDAR CONSTRUCTION
We follow in the tradition of our ancestors in our walk-in humidor. Lovingly built by hand, this unique room boasts a carefully restored space. The walls, ceiling, and shelving system are built entirely of imported Spanish Cedar with handsome accents of crown molding in hand-burnished Mahogany trim to provide a visual frame for showcasing our cigars. In creating a proper humidor, using Spanish Cedar is the only way to go. Due to it's open, spongy cellular makeup and neutral aroma, Spanish Cedar is one of the most crucial elements in establishing and maintaining an environment which encourages harmonic blending of cigars that are curing.

Spanish Cedar also allows for more stable preservation of the  cigar once ready for smoking. Because of this, our wall-length curing bins are constructed of 2-inch thick planks of solid cedar to  allow for a most gentle re-balancing of the oils as the tobaccos blend  and mingle during the maturation process. All materials in the  humidor were chosen with great care to ensure the most pristine  environment possible inside. For example, the Mahogany trim was  chosen because it is a hardwood that carries no aroma and has such a tight cell structure that osmosis is discouraged. This dedication to proper materials is an essential component in establishing and maintaining purity of product.

CREATING THE IDEAL TROPICAL ENVIRONMENT
Upon the foundation of traditional, time-honored materials use, we have applied cutting edge science to re-create the natural tropical atmosphere most ideal for the preserving our product. First, we established a completely sealed environment. Just like a small weather system, the natural movement of air, moisture, and temperature are manipulated inside our humidor to create desired flow around the room and the cigars. We have built our humidor to augment this flow and increase circulation by applying the science of modern sound movement theory to our interior structural design

THE SHELVING SYSTEM
Incorporating current modern concepts of sound baffling systems as applied in professional recording studios, we designed a shelving system that would encourage the free, natural convective movement of air and humidity just as the acoustic studio baffles adjust and direct the path of sound waves to achieve a desired acoustic environment.

Our suspended, multi-level shelving system puts this sound wave theory to the science of cigar manufacturing by allowing for the natural movement of humidity and temperature to flow in, out, and around the cigars. By encouraging natural convection to occur, the cigar is more ideally preserved. Furthermore, all shelves are tilted at an angle optimal for allowing a more thorough exposure of the cigar to the humidor's environment and all boxes are lifted up on a custom dowel system to encourage natural waves of humidity circulation underneath the product as well.

HUMIDITY
Another crucial aspect of maintaining the ideal humidor environment involves humidity control. We must remember that even a cigar deemed ready to smoke is quite moist. When the leaf reaches the point where the moisture content is eliminated, the oils that carry the richness and aroma will have been eliminated as well and the cigar will have been destroyed. By carefully maintaining a consistent humidity of 70 percent within the humidor, our cigars are preserved so as to achieve the ideal balance of rich aroma and easy smokability. Of course, we only use pure, distilled water in our humidification units to ensure purity.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL
TTemperature plays a major role in proper curing and preservation of our cigars. Contrary to popular belief, it is an equally important element to caring for cigars as is maintaining proper humidity. The more obvious reason for maintaining temperatures is to protect the moisture levels in the leaves. The oils within the leaves carry the essence of the cigar. The richness in flavor and aroma is completely destroyed when the oils are devoid of moisture. The oils are also harmed when changes in their surrounding humidity levels are made too quickly.

We keep our Humidor cold (about 65 Degrees) because osmosis will occur more slowly at a cooler temperature. This is desirable because it allows for greater stability within the moisture levels of the oils in the leaves and provides for a slower more gentle adjustment to the desired dryness in the curing bins. Ultimately, this plays a major role in our ability to harness the richness and flavor of the leaf and create cigars that are beautiful, aromatic, and flavorful.

OUR ORGANIC COMMITMENT
The next major role temperature control plays reflects our dedication to creating an ALL NATURAL product. We believe that an organic product is superior on many levels. Organic cigars taste better and they are better for you. The challenge with cigars is that the tobacco leaf naturally carries within it a tobacco beetle. To protect the cigars from being eaten, the major lines fumigate their stock before shipping from the factory. At the House of Cigars, we apply a much simpler, natural biological program which is based on temperature control. By consistently maintaining a base average temperature of 65 Degrees in the humidor, we keep a "Wintering Effect" in place that prevents beetle development. Simple, effective, and all natural, this program ensures that the delicate character of the tobacco leaf is never tainted with non-organic contaminants and always produces a clean finish with no acrid aftertaste.

FRESH PRODUCT
Another unique characteristic of our cigars is that they are incredibly fresh. For the smoker, a fresh cigar means incomparable aroma and unparalleled flavor because the oils in the leaves are still bursting forth with potent character.

We cure our cigars for 30 days - just long enough to balance out the moisture levels for an easy draw and to allow for proper "marinating of the oils" for a unified blend. Our product is mature and ready for smoking full of the vibrant character that makes our fresh hand rolled cigars so desirable. For us, it is a purposeful revival of authentic cigar production. In days gone by, one would stop by the cigar roller's table on the street corner and pick up a newly made cigar for smoking.

Although it seems new to many of us, this concept of smoking fresh cigars is deeply rooted in the Latino tradition. And we are proud to be one of a handful of factories that bring this dedication to authenticity to the forefront once again. A stale, flavorless cigar is the result of the current cigar manufacturing industry's choice to outsource production to the cheapest labor market far away from the cigar shop the product is delivered to. Sometimes it takes a year or more to get the cigar from factory to a retail store and, in the end, it is the consumer who suffers most by settling for a old, dry smoke that is a mere ghost of the blend it was at time of manufacture. Although you may choose to cure our cigars longer in your own humidor, we say "go ahead and smoke them. We will be happy to make you some more!"
